  Level Crossings 240819.pdf (Presentation)

Adobe_PDF_file_icon_32x32 Human Factors at Level Crossings final – IRSE Australasia – Melbourne 2024.pdf (Technical Paper)

Paper presented to IRSE in Melbourne, August 2024. It covers the risks associated with excessive warning times at level crossings. It also provides discussion of the engineering basis for minimum warning times.

Clockface Timetable Elements 2018

Adobe_PDF_file_icon_32x32 Clockface timetables 180617.pdf(Presentation)

Presentation slides for IRSE Local Meeting 2018 in Melbourne. This follows the IRSE International Convention in Switzerland and work done in a current project recommending required infrastructure to implement a clockface timetable on a line featuring a single line with passing loops.

  2016-April-Burns-Movement Authorities 160329.pdf (Presentation)

Adobe_PDF_file_icon_32x32 Movement Authorities IRSE template 160315B.pdf (Technical Paper)

Technical paper presented at IRSE Adelaide Conference April 2016. This is the second in a series addressing the Systems Framework for signalling, a companion in theme to “Degraded Mode Working”.

Train Queues – Selected Applications. 2016

  2016 – Melbourne – Burns – Vital Train Queues 161022.pdf (Presentation)

Vital train queues irse template 161029.pdf (Technical Paper)

Technical paper presented at IRSE Melbourne Conference November 2016. This is the fourth in a series addressing the Systems Framework for signalling. Focus is on use of train queues in protection functions and resource allocation.

Sleeves, Blocks and Keys 2014

Adobe_PDF_file_icon_32x32  Sleeving paper C 140510.pdf (Presentation)

Presentation slides for IRSE Local Meeting 2014 in Melbourne. This follows from a study carried out to inform RRL Project discussion as to vital vs non-vital sleeving options (“collars” in the rest of the world).

Flank Protection – One way to skin a cat. 2013

Adobe_PDF_file_icon_32x32 Flank protection paper B 131117.pdf (Presentation)

Presentation slides for IRSE Victorian Local Meeting November 2013. The material was originally developed to support a risk assessment process for RRL project.

Adobe_PDF_file_icon_32x32  Electronic Virtual Trainstops IRSE template 170528.pdf (Technical Paper)

Technical paper presented at IRSE Brisbane Conference July 2017. This looks at the issue of interoperability in new generation signalling (eg CBTC) by focusing on the requirement to provide a trainstop for a “non fitted” train.

Sweating the Asset 2017

Adobe_PDF_file_icon_32x32  Sweating the asset A 170204.pdf (Presentation)

Presentation slides for IRSE Victorian Local Meeting February 2017. Looks at high capacity railways overcome the “constraint” to headway of station stops by decoupling station stops from stopping patterns.
