Designing the Layout 2024
Designing Layout post.pdf(Presentation)
Designing the Layout – IRSE Australasia – Perth 2024 3 – Peter Burns – post.pdf(Technical Paper)
Paper presented to IRSE in Perth, October 2024. Marking the 60th anniversary of the Shinkansen, it looks at how operations and infrastructure must work together to achieve high capacity and low passenger journey times.
Human Factors at Level Crossings 2024
Level Crossings 240819.pdf (Presentation)
Human Factors at Level Crossings final – IRSE Australasia – Melbourne 2024.pdf (Technical Paper)
Paper presented to IRSE in Melbourne, August 2024. It covers the risks associated with excessive warning times at level crossings. It also provides discussion of the engineering basis for minimum warning times.
Clockface Timetable Elements 2018
Clockface timetables 180617.pdf(Presentation)
Presentation slides for IRSE Local Meeting 2018 in Melbourne. This follows the IRSE International Convention in Switzerland and work done in a current project recommending required infrastructure to implement a clockface timetable on a line featuring a single line with passing loops.
Movement Authorities – A Systems Framework. 2016
2016-April-Burns-Movement Authorities 160329.pdf (Presentation)
Movement Authorities IRSE template 160315B.pdf (Technical Paper)
Technical paper presented at IRSE Adelaide Conference April 2016. This is the second in a series addressing the Systems Framework for signalling, a companion in theme to “Degraded Mode Working”.
Train Queues – Selected Applications. 2016
2016 – Melbourne – Burns – Vital Train Queues 161022.pdf (Presentation)
Vital train queues irse template 161029.pdf (Technical Paper)
Technical paper presented at IRSE Melbourne Conference November 2016. This is the fourth in a series addressing the Systems Framework for signalling. Focus is on use of train queues in protection functions and resource allocation.
Sleeves, Blocks and Keys 2014
Sleeving paper C 140510.pdf (Presentation)
Presentation slides for IRSE Local Meeting 2014 in Melbourne. This follows from a study carried out to inform RRL Project discussion as to vital vs non-vital sleeving options (“collars” in the rest of the world).
Flank Protection – One way to skin a cat. 2013
Flank protection paper B 131117.pdf (Presentation)
Presentation slides for IRSE Victorian Local Meeting November 2013. The material was originally developed to support a risk assessment process for RRL project.
RAMS – Is that when you have more than one sheep? 2012
RAMS paper A 121005.pdf (Presentation)
RAMS Peter Burns 120921.pdf (Technical Paper)
Technical paper presented at IRSE Sydney Conference October 2012. A reflection on the opportunities to improve RAMS outcomes by applying systems engineering principles.
Seeing and Responding to Signals 2009
Seeing and responding to signals-ausrail b.pdf (Presentation)
Fundamentals of Signal Sighting plus glare C.pdf (Technical paper)
Presentation slides for AusRail in 2009, as updated for a more recent local technical meeting. These accompany the technical paper “Fundamentals of signal sighting”.
Electronic Virtual Trainstops 2017
Electronic Virtual Trainstops 170711.pdf (Presentation)
Electronic Virtual Trainstops IRSE template 170528.pdf (Technical Paper)
Technical paper presented at IRSE Brisbane Conference July 2017. This looks at the issue of interoperability in new generation signalling (eg CBTC) by focusing on the requirement to provide a trainstop for a “non fitted” train.
Sweating the Asset 2017
Sweating the asset A 170204.pdf (Presentation)
Presentation slides for IRSE Victorian Local Meeting February 2017. Looks at high capacity railways overcome the “constraint” to headway of station stops by decoupling station stops from stopping patterns.
Time Based Movement Authorities 2016
2016-Local-Burns-Time based authorities 160715.pdf (Presentation)
Time based authorities IRSE template 160619.pdf (Technical Paper)
Paper presented to IRSE in Perth, July 2016. This is a follow-on to the paper presented in Adelaide earlier in the year. It covers two applications including a method for failsafe level crossings.
Travel to Work – Have we forgotten the passenger? 2016
Travel to work paper B 160228.pdf (Presentation)
Presentation slides for IRSE Victorian Local Meeting March 2016. The paper looks at the fundamental requirements any commuter rail system must meet and puts some of the common strategies into context.
Degraded Mode Working 2015
Degraded mode paper C 150331.pdf (Presentation)
Presentation slides for IRSE Victorian Local Meeting March 2015. Looks at the contribution of “setting the route” to safety of train running. Shows how in degraded mode (when a fault has occurred), it is often safer to allow the route to set than for the interlocking to abandon the signaler altogether.
Overlaps on Regional Lines 2010
regional overlaps-ausrail b.pdf (Presentation)
Ausrail 2010 Overlaps on regional lines B.pdf (Technical Paper)
Paper presented to AusRail in 2010. The material for this paper was originally developed to inform an Application to Vary Accreditation for an ARTC project.
